Burgas, district Sarafovo, locate on the sea coast, about 1.5 km of the main road from Burgas to Varna E87.

ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PORT AND FORTRESS SARAFOVO

History

The ancient and medieval port and fortress can be dated back to the 4th - 6th century.
At sea, land and underwater occur preserved parts of the ancient embankment, buildings and other architectural elements.
Recent studies have revealed the ruins of a Christian chapel from the 6th-11th century.

Preservation

Status - archaeological cultural heritage of national significance. It is spread over a territory of approx. 600 square meters. In 2012 is planned a rescue archaeological research aiming detection, restoration and exhibition of the findings.


After completion of the archaeological survey and exposition, the visitors paths along the shore will be equipped with handrails and wooden / movable platforms will be acting as observational grounds; the restored old pier will make possible to view on land and under water the preserved parts of ancient embankment, buildings, etc. architectural sites.

Area Descriptions

Excellent conditions for telescope observation of the opposite coast line Cape Foros and Burgas.
Possible organization of underwater observations and diving trip to the sunken pier. Prehistoric fossils of ancient species can be seen along the pedestrian coastal route.

Offering tour guides in Bulgarian and foreign languages.
