Route №2

The route starts at the Point Zero in the city centre of Burgas, located at the intersection of the main street Alexandrovska and St. Cyril and Methodius st. From this point, drive through Troikata square to reach the bike lane along the streets Gen.Gurko and Adam Mickiewicz towards the Sea Garden, where the designated bicycle lanes lead to the asphalt road for Burgas Salt Works - South. You will pass through the security zone, where are the basins with lye and therapeutic mud on Atanasovsko Lake. So far the distance is 4.9 km and takes about 45 minutes.

The asphalt road continues north along the lake. Pass under the bridge on dual carriage way I-9 (E87) Burgas - Varna and turn right to "Burgas Salt Works - North". After the barrier in the right direction across the railroad over the dike, you will spot both sheds of "Tochkata", a spot for bird watchers on Lake Atanasovsko. The distance from the lye basin to the bird watching spot is about 1 km and takes around 10 minutes

The route goes back to the junction under the bridge, as at the railway crossing, turn left and drive on the paved road for about 400 m, then continuing into a dirt road passing the ornamental nursery. After the nursery garden continue straight to reaches an asphalt road, where you have to turn right and continue up to the junction for the mining village Cherno More. The road to the village is not very busy and you could leisurely drive to the former mine, where you will take a left over a dirt road leading to Lake Atanasovsko.

You will pass by several farm buildings and then head on the old Anchialo road towards Banevo residential district. Lake Atanasovskoe remains south of the road and to the north of the lake is Mina Cherno more. Currently there are no nameplates or markings on this road. Before the forest area part of the Mineral Baths Park, turn right and climb up to a height called "Manastir Tepe" where there are remains of a Thracian sanctuary from the 4th - 3rd century BC. Currently there are no info signs or markings on this road. Further information can be obtained from the Regional Historical Museum in Burgas. The sanctuary is situated on a small hill from which you have a panoramic view of the surrounding area including the districts Vetren, Banevo, the micro dam of Vetren and parts of the nature reserve Lake Atanasovsko. The bike route continues back along the fields, crosses the creek and passes through the forest park of the Mineral Baths, a place used all year round for recreation and sport activities by the citizens of Burgas. The ancient and medieval town, "Akve Kalide - Thermopolis" is located next to the public bath built by Suleiman the Magnificent. The excavations at the archaeological site are still ongoing and there are not enough information signs.

The distance between the bird watching spot "Tochkata" and "Akve Kalide - Thermopolis" is 16.5 km, from which 4.5 km asphalt and 12 km dirt road. Time to travel: 4 hours.

The route on the way back passes the wellness complex "Sveti Mina" then follows the Anchialo road to the lake, where it takes the right turnoff to "Deseti kilometer". In this area is situated the city prison, within which lies the archaeological site - Prehistoric settlement mound in the vicinity Solna niva. The route is not marked and it is best to use a map or GPS coordinates. Cross the channel to Lake Atanasovsko over the concrete bridge and drive along the dirt roads through fields and farm buildings to reach the gravel road leading to the newly built shopping centres near residential district "Izgrev" in Burgas. To the east, close to the roundabout on the exit from Burgas city direction Sarafovo is the shelter for bird watching on Lake Atanasovsko.

The distance from Akve Kalide to the bird watching shelter is 14.1 km including 3.3 km asphalt and 10.8 km dirt road. The time to travel is around 3 hours and 15 minutes

From the shelter you can follow the bikeway along Lake Atanasovsko, taking you to the Sea Garden, from where driving along the bike lanes on Adam Mickiewicz st. and Gen. Gurko st. will take you to the central square Troikata and the main street Alexandrovska. The distance is 5.5 km, which can be covered for 30 min.

Food and drink: Take with! During the hike food and drinks can be purchased only in the local shops in residential district Vetren.

Equipment: bicycle, tires with tread pattern suitable for asphalt and dirt roads, sports suit and shoes, raincoat, small backpack or saddlebags, map of the area or GPS device, helmet, glasses - sun protection or insects stopping, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, spare inner tire, tire patches, pump, tool kit, front and rear bicycle lights.
